Lowering your I-beam equipped Ford truck can be a tricky proposition. Many people just add a set of lowering springs and call it a day, but the truth is, using lowering springs for any type of severe drop can cause your suspension and steering geometry to go completely out of whack. This can cause a rough ride, poor steering, and dangerous wandering conditions especially at highway speeds. One way to correct this problem is through the use of dropped I-beams. Dropped I-beams lower your vehicle by moving the hub mounting point higher. This maintains the proper suspension geometry and will give a great lowered look without sacrificing drivability. The twin I-beam front suspension was first developed by Ford in the late 1950s as a way to improve ride quality in their truck lineup without sacrificing toughness and load carrying capacity. The design is a bit of a hybrid between a solid axle and fully independent a-arms and it successfully gave Ford trucks less ride harshness and better vehicle control. Unfortunately because this design was principally used by Ford, the aftermarket for performance and lowering components has not been as good as more conventional designs. Q: What are drop I-beams? Why buy them?
A: Many Ford vehicles came equipped with a unique front suspension design that utilized twin I-beams. While the design is very robust it is tricky to lower it properly. Lowering springs may work on conventional suspension setups, but when used on an I-beam suspension they create bad steering and suspension geometry that produces a harsh ride and downright dangerous driving characteristics. Dropped I-beams have been altered by moving the hub mounting point higher to give a lower ride height without altering the springs. This keeps all the geometry intact and gives a great lowered look without the dangerous/rough ride. If you want to lower your I-beam Ford there is simply no other safe option; dropped I-beams are the only way to go.
